We're just over 1 day until 1st overall is picked in our inaugural draft, so I figured I'd put a post up for people to discuss the draft and their prep, should they wish.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting detailed information here (although by all means... ), but I'm curious how long people have been crunching numbers, filling out spreadsheets, analyzing predictions, etc. Or on the other hand, how many are planning on going a more dynamic route by having a general guideline of who is best at a certain range and taking the 18 hours they have to make a pick.
I have no doubt we're all approaching this very differently, so share what you can.
In live drafts, I would have a definitely ordered list of which players I would pick when and where. In this draft, there is more time in between draft picks, so I figure I will analyse my positional needs as the draft progresses.
Given that this is a keeper league, it will be interesting to see how much people prioritise young potential over proven veterans. The prospects draft will be especially interesting in this respect! Will it be the 'proven' Gaudreau/Forsberg, rising Drouin/Kuznetsov, or raw McDavid/Eichel that will go first?

That's a great point. It should be interesting to see the value older players get. I'm especially interested to see where guys like Chara, Datsyuk and even Jagr land.

This is a reminder that the 18 hours is not meant for strategy and thinking who you want to pick. The 18 hours is for if you are sleeping or at work and are not able to make your pick.
Everybody should be doing there research before they are on the clock so when it is there turn to pick they can make their selection and keep the draft moving!

Sure, but you can't enforce that. At the end of the day, you have 18 hours to make a pick. I agree though, you shouldn't be using that time to develop a strategy.

I can't enforce it but I can remind everybody that we should be doing this so the draft is efficient. It will be awful if this draft runs slowly
By constantly replacing GM's less than a week before the draft so we have enough teams...
Lol but seriously, I usually rank by position based on averages and age, then do some secondary sorting based on gut feelings. It's given me success so far, but I have no clue how it will fair in a league this hardcore.

Have we thought about reducing the time from 18 hours for the later rounds to help speed things up? As time goes on, people will become more comfortable with the process and the picks will be less impactful.

I don't htink so. Again the 18 hours are in place so people have time to make picks. I don't want to reduce the time and screw somebody over who has a 12 hour work day and can't possible make a pick.
That's why the 18/12 rule is in effect. It's meant to help people with jobs with long hours or the time difference between picks. Whether it's early or late in the draft we should be expecting people to make quick picks no matter.
However, I disagree that late picks don't matter. I think the late picks in this draft will determine which teams will be bad, good, or great. Hockey knowledge will reign supreme!

I never said the later picks didn't matter, I said they'd be less impactful. But fair, I'm just concerned about timing with such a large league, especially given the dropouts we've had already.

I'm concerned as well. That's why missing picks has a very harsh penalty.
What sucks about drafting now is, no rankings have been posted since the beginning of the offseason, so they're all super unreliable (eg Phil Kessel). Basically the only resource we have is Fantrax.

Another note: If it were me, I wouldn't rely too much on last year's point totals in determining best available. So much happened this offseason, it's not an entirely accurate representation of the value of some of these guys (case in point, injuries to guys like Kane, Perry, etc)

I wholeheartedly agree with CBJ. According to last season's rankings, Patrick Kane and Corey Perry are both ranked outside the top 100. Even with the PPG rankings, Kane is 71st, and Perry 102nd. Nick Foligno on the other hand is 4th overall, and 27th according to PPG...
Seasons are unpredictable. Go with your gut, and don't rely too heavily on past performance. I for one would be at least a little bit hesitant selecting Foligno over Kane and Perry.
