I've crunched the numbers from the NHL draft to see which nationalities dominated our draft, and which teams looked outside of North America to build their championship competitors.
(N.B., I won't be able to do the prospect draft, as I do not have nationality data as easily on hand for the players)
Here is the breakdown of players selected by nationality, along with the highest selected draft pick from each country:
Total - Country - Highest Pick
246 - Canada (CAN) - Crosby, Sidney - 2nd
105 - USA (USA) - Kane, Patrick - 16th
43 - Sweden (SWE) - Karlsson, Erik - 8th
21 - Czech Republic (CZE) - Voracek, Jakub - 11th
20 - Russia (RUS) - Ovechkin, Alex - 1st
15 - Finland (FIN) - Rinne, Pekka - 24th
7 - Slovakia (SVK) - Halak, Jaroslav - 42nd
6 - Switzerland (CHE) - Josi, Roman - 52nd
5 - Denmark (DNK) - Andersen, Frederik - 48th
4 - Germany (DEU) - Seidenberg, Dennis - 278th
3 - Austria (AUT) - Vanek, Thomas - 192nd
1 - Slovenia (SVN) - Kopitar, Anze - 56th
1 - Latvia (LVA) - Girgensons, Zemgus - 149th
1 - Norway (NOR) - Zuccarello, Mats - 207th
1 - France (FRA) - Roussel, Antoine - 288th
1 - Kazakhstan (KAZ) - Khudobin, Anton - 409th
Philadelphia and Boston looked across the pond to find talent, with both teams selecting 10 players from outside of North America. Los Angeles on the other hand is relying on home grown talent, with only 2 of his 24 roster slots not being Canadian or American. He has however chosen wisely with these two selections, as both were from Finland.
The breakdown of non-North American players is as follows:
