Welcome to the New York Islanders Weekly Report! Because what good is a New York team without a spotlight. We’re looking at you, Rangers. Since this is the first weekly report and it is already week 9 we have some catching up to do so here is your season to date:
Starting with week 1, the first game in franchise history, the Islanders get embarrassed by the now non-existent Calgary Flames 253.7 to 185.
Since then, the Islanders have amounted 4 wins and 3 more losses, bringing their record to 4-4 entering week 9. Their 4 wins have come against the Anaheim Ducks, California Golden Seals, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Columbus Blue Jackets.
While their other 3 losses have been to the Winnipeg Jets (Formerly the Dallas Stars (Formerly the Washington Capitals)), Arizona Coyotes in a hard to swallow .7 point loss game, that came down to the wire, and to the in-state rival and commissioner of the RDHL, New York Rangers.
Some huge transactions have taken place this season but probably none bigger than trading away the 1st overall pick of the inaugural RDHL draft to the Minnesota North Stars. Looking back this trade sent Ryan Getzlaf, Jonathan Toews, and Jonas Hiller to New York, while Minnesota received Alex Ovechkin, Tuukka Rask, and Patrice Bergeron. The trade was a bit mishandled by the Islanders if you ask some of the other GMs but the biggest blunder of this whole trade was selecting Ryan Getzlaf at 15th overall. Patrick Kane went 16th overall to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Other huge trades that took place during the draft would later turn out to be the deals that landed Drew Doughty, Leon Draisaitl, and Jonathan Quick, the top defenseman, forward, and goalie for the Islanders this year, in New York.
As the season progressed we saw the additions of Linus Ullmark and Dennis Seidenberg, as well as Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson, who was selected in the Mid-Season Prospect Draft with the 5th overall pick.
We also saw the trades that sent away Tyson Barrie, Derek Dorsett, and Jiri Hudler. As well as the trades that saw Shea Weber come and go. The most notable acquisitions from these trades are Charlie Coyle, Joshua Ho-Sang, Johnny Boychuk, and Andrew Ladd.
There were rumors that other teams were looking to acquire Andrew Ladd and Alex Killorn. There should be more news on this shortly.
The RDHL New York Islanders have announced that they will be giving out their own team awards to players who have demonstrated outstanding ability on and off the ice. The list of awards are:
Team MVP: Awarded to the most valuable member of the team.
The running for MVP is a tough one to judge, based on all of the recent transactions. The players currently in the best position to win this award are Drew Doughty, Gustav Nyquist, Ryan Getzlaf and prospect Leon Draisaitl.
Best Forward: Awarded to the most valuable forward on the team.
Similar to the MVP race, this seems to be a battle between Ryan Getzlaf, Gustav Nyquist, and Leon Draisaitl. As the year progresses, we have to keep our eye on Andrew Ladd, to see if he can catch up to the other 3 forwards that are currently ahead of him.
Best Defenseman: Awarded to the most valuable defenseman on the team.
The best defenseman on the New York Islanders is without a doubt, Drew Doughty. However, this is only because of the recent addition of Johnny Boychuk and the injury ailing Brooks Orpik. We will have to see if they can catch up to Doughty as the year goes on.
Best Goalie: Awarded to the most valuable goalie on the team.
The best Goalie award is no contest. Jonathan Quick has been the most valuable goalie on the Islanders so far this year. However, with Andrew Hammond racking up a better PPG total slotted to return to action this week, that could change very soon.
Team Rookie of the Year: Awarded to the prospect who proved to be a valuable member of the main roster.
The Rookie of the Year is going to be a tough one to win for anybody but Leon Draisaitl. The only other prospects on the main roster are goalies Andrew Hammond and Linus Ullmark. With Draisaitl leading the entire team in scoring with 26 points in just 20 games, the Islanders will need to make a trade to even find a prospect that could challenge Draisaitl this season.
This week the Islanders take on the Philadelphia Flyers. With only one day left, the Islanders lead 145.5 to 138.4.
We will be back tomorrow with a review of this game, and your week in review!
