I have the 1st overall pick in a points based (G, A, +/-, PIM, PPP) 10-team league with 6 keepers per team. Players drafted in the first two rounds are ineligible to be kept the following year, so I'm looking at who I should be taking with the 1st pick of the 3rd round.
I don't know for sure who will be available when that 3rd round pick will come up. There are lots of immediate impact players available to be drafted in the 1st two rounds (e.g. McDavid, Ovie, Crosby, Malkin, Benn, Hall, Stamkos, Kopitar, Rask, Quick, Andersen, Gibson, Murray, etc), however I would expect this year's rookies to be there, plus some more established young players from the list below.
Potentially available established players:
- Leon Draisaitl
- Sebastian Aho
- Rickard Rakell
- Matthew Tkachuk
- John Klingberg
- Brayden Point
- William Nylander
- Alex DeBrincat
- Nico Hischier
Rookies:
- Rasmus Dahlin
- Elias Petterson
- Andrei Svechnikov
- Casey Mittelstadt
Some of the guys in the first list will likely be taken in the 1st two rounds (e.g. Drai, Aho, Rakell etc), however there will also be players there that will be available when my pick comes around. I am taking over an existing team, and my keeper crop is the worst in the league, so I am definitely at a disadvantage this season. That said, I do have the 1st overall pick, and will be able to take Connor McDavid 1st OA, so the season won't be a write-off.
What would you do in my scenario? Go with one of the more proven players, or swing for the fences and try to get someone who will be a top 5 players in the league in the next handful of seasons?
