So. I want to make an official statement defending Islander fans because the TV and non-Islander sites don't tell the whole story.
When Tavares contract was coming up he asked not to be traded. He said he wanted to come back. Everyone gave him the benefit of the doubt, we assumed he was negotiating. He had an excellent reputation as an honest straight forward guy.
The day I heard he left for the Leafs I was happy for him. I was disappointed of course but it's one of those things where you keep moving forward. I knew that it takes a team to win and we still had some good depth to work with, and that there were other good free agents on the market.
Then come to realize, we gave him the biggest offer on the table. He passed up 11 Million dollars. .... Now, does it look like I have asshole on my forehad?... Does that make sense to you? ... Does that sound like someone who wanted to come back?
I've lived in NY for 5 years. This is my home now. My friends are here now. I have a fiance, and she has family here which I am a part of. Outside of the traffic the people are actually a very nice loyal family oriented bunch. Point being you do not live somewhere 9 years and not feel like it's home.
To us, it's clear he thought he was aboard a sinking ship with the bad season and the changes in the front office. He saw a perfect narrative to hop off. Maybe he did want to stay at some point but it's clear his mind was made up BEFORE the deadline, and we got played.
So. No. He's not going to get pass. We genuinely trusted him, and maybe this is part of the game, but he also ruined his 9 year legacy to play it. His time here literally did not mean enough for him to be upfront and honest with us.
