Unless we agree otherwise, the draft will have to be offline. We currently have 93 days/24 rounds/480 picks to go until our league is ready for the season.
I believe that the draft should go something like this: The New York Islanders have the first pick, they are now on the board. The currently have 18 hours to select a player. If they fail to select a player within this time frame, they are penalized and the next team will pick. To select a player they must message NYR (Rob) with their desired player. Once NYR (Rob) confirms, they must post their pick in their team roster page for everyone to see. Once the pick has officially been announced, the next team is on the board.
I know 18 hours is a lot of time, but everyone should be submitting their picks as soon as possible. Otherwise, the draft will take longer than it needs to be.
The trading of draft picks and prospect draft picks will open once the date of the draft is announced, and will continue through the drafts. It needs to be decided whether or not players who have been drafted can be moved during the draft, I say it be allowed.
NYR (Rob) and I also proposed that the draft start July 15th. Feedback on the date is encouraged!
If I did my math right, if we give each person 18 hours and there's 480 total picks, we'd need 8,640 hours or 360 days to do this draft this way. Even if most people submit early and pick in 10 hours, that's 4800 hours or 200 days.
We would need to average a bit more than 4.5 hours per person per pick in 93 days to be ready in time (again, please check my math).
These are the threads where you can see who has been drafted and to which team.
Besides this, the time limits above is what will be set in place. I don't think this should be to a vote as this will be enforced to make sure everybody in this league is consistent and timely with picks.
All this being said....
I think players that have been drafted should of course be allowed to be traded. This is the beauty of the league. You are the GM. I mean The Islanders technically don't have to be pick #1. They can decide to trade the pick for other picks later in the NHL draft or in the prospect draft. Free range is important!
July 15th was just a date to thrown out there, but we can start sooner. I just wanted there to be enough time to close the polls already open.

The 18 hours are only there to help people who happen to be out for the day or are in a different time zone. It is no way meant to be used for organizing trades and taking time to research prospects. You should have this information at the ready when it's your turn to make a pick.

I am in another league that has done some offline drafting. We each get 12 hours to pick, but the first 3 rounds are done live. I don't know if this is possible. Maybe we could do a semi-live draft where in the first 3 rounds or so we can do it through the forum but with each team getting 30 mins to make a pick.
Also, I take issue with "The currently have 18 hours to select a player. If they fail to select a player within this time frame, they are penalized and the next team will pick." (Flyers post).
I think if the player runs out of time, who ever is keeping track of the draft would just give them the BPA (best player available), I don't know if that is what you meant by penalized.

I just don't think its possible to do any kind of live draft if we are on 3 continents and 5 or 6 time zones.
As for penialty, I think it had to be harsher than best player available. Chris and I had talked about dropping 5 rounds in the draft. You then have only 12 hours to make all of your following picks. If you miss a second time the. You drop another 5 rounds and have 12 hours to make all of your followin picks. If you miss a third time, you should be expelled from this league.
I think with 18 hours allotted to you there should be no excuse for missing your pick and you should consider if you want to be apart of this league. With a harsh penalty it will keep everybody in check. If you are worried about failing this time constraint you should think about your involvement in this league as well. I don't mean to sound harsh, but it's just the reality of the situation.

I guess the thing I am worried about is if this is a forum draft, I want to make sure everyone is updated accordingly as the draft progresses. Maybe with each pick, we can make sure to update the spreadsheet. Also, is their going to be any sort of penalty or forfeiture of pick if someone drafts a player already drafted?

This is exactly why we will hVe the spreadsheet and as I said above I will be updating two separate threads on the forums with every player/prospect drafted so there is no confusion. This was their should be three locations where players/prospects drafted will be collected.
It's for picking a player already drafted o don't think as harsh of a penalty is needed. I think we should tell the person that they need to repick, but the next team is on the clock. The draft commences as it should and with each pick made those players are off the board for the person who picked incorrectly. This person can jump in at any time to pick a player that is still available. So rather than dropping rounds, they drop picks. Make sense?
Also, is their going to be any sort of penalty or forfeiture of pick if someone drafts a player already drafted?
Hopefully the spreadsheet will help us avoid this, but I think it'd be fair to give that team the BPA at the time that the error is discovered. (For example: #1 drafts Crosby, #2 isn't paying attention and also drafts Crosby. We discover that two people have drafted Crosby at pick #50. Every pick from 3 - 50 remains the same, but the duplicate Crosby pick is replaced by Backes, or whoever the hell is BPA at pick 51.)

There should be enough eyes on this where this should not happen. We should know right away. I know I will be paying attention to this and cross referencing past picks so people know right away.
So are we gonna get a PM or some sort of notification that will let us know when we're on the clock, or do I have to just aways have to check all day long? Im just asking because it would suck if I just randomly look one day to find out I have only an hour left to pick.
I really like Blackhawks idea of doing the live draft for the first 3 rounds but id have to agree that it would be a nightmare to organize 20 people from all over the world to agree on a day and time.

If you check once before work in the morning and once before work in the evening you shouldn't be in a situation where there is 1 hour left on the clock.
We can try and organize for the team that just picked to email the following team that they are on the clock, but you can't always rely on that person to this, so it really relies on checking the website. Draft season is really the only time of the year to check a lot during the day. I don't think it's a lot to ask for.

I like this idea a lot!
In theory it can work, but the team who is on the clock should be accountable for knowing when it's there turn. They can't say, I never saw the email and think that's a pass. They still need to check the forums and not rely on the emails in case somebody forgets.
Question: will that work sheet be updated for every draft pick, or is that something for me to keep track of? Is their going to be a way to see un-selected players like in a yahoo live draft?

I'm going to do my very best to keep everything up to date on the forums and on fantrax.
Once a player is drafted, I will try and update the main draft pages here and here. I will also be updating each round thread at the top so you can see who was drafted that round. I will also try and import players onto rosters on fantrax so the player list found here is as up to date as it possibly can be.

The "Top 500 Rankings" tab on the spreadsheet will also show which players are still available. It may be an idea to expand this to a full list of available players, and to add some filtering capabilities. Chris (Flyers) and I can do some work on this to make it more user friendly.
