We will be temporarily pausing the draft prior to the start of Round 17 and the prospect draft. We are doing this, as Tampa Bay Lightning have missed their second pick in the NHL draft, and we feel that it is important to have a discussion on how we should proceed. These are the facts that I have gathered so far:
Tampa Bay Lighting is currently on holiday in the U.S.;
He submitted a list of 5 NHL picks and 1 prospect to the Commissioner prior to leaving;
His 5 NHL picks were taken prior to his Round 16 pick;
His 1st round prospect pick is likely to be available with his 5th overall pick;
He has not been contactable for several days;
We do not know how long he will be away.
Given that he did inform the Commissioner prior to his holiday, I personally think that this merits some more discussion prior to administering the default penalty. I felt that this opinion was supported by others in the chat room as well.
Let's postpone the prospect draft until sometime next week, we shouldn't fault TBL for going on a vacation at the end of July. We don't need to rush into the draft either, we don't have any deadlines to meet.

I am fine with halting the draft and giving the guy a chance to show up. He did try to leave enough picks behind, but it seems that he should not be gone long if he only left 5 picks for the NHL rounds. I agree that if he doesn't show up by his 2nd round prospect that their should be a vote, per league rules.
My only problem with autodrafting is that sometimes, we pick the best available and that would not have been his pick, I prefer no auto-drafting.
I have no problem going as far as we can with the draft until his pick comes up again. So next round of the regular draft and the second round of the prospect draft. How long has he been gone?

I don't really see this as a conversation of when the drafts start, I see this more of a conversation of what to do with his picks if he misses again.
Minnesota Wild realized he was another NHL pick in 8 picks. If we apply the 3rd wait to that pick, then if he doens't get back in time his 17th round NHL pick is affected (which doesn't matter at this point) and his 2nd round prospect pick is unaffected for the new owner.
In the meantime, we can continue as planned with the propsect draft as we wait until the 12 hours passes on the NHL draft. I'm 99% sure nobody is picking his player top 4.

I would ideally not find a new owner this late in the draft. Tampa has drafted his team (the players who are left are just roster fillers), and he is likely to get his #1 prospect pick.
I'm fine with him dropping 5 rounds each time he misses a pick in the NHL draft (actually - I'd even propose automatically dropping 5 rounds whenever his pick comes up if we don't hear from him, just so that we don't have to wait the 12 hours in between). I am however also of the contradictory opinion, that rather than replace him, keep him while auto-drafting the best available player on the Dobber prospect ranking.
Yes - I acknowledge that this isn't what we originally agreed in the rules, but he already has his team. He already has his #1 prospect. He is likely to stick it out during the season. With a new owner we never know what we're going to get.
I think we continue with the prospect draft as he's submitted a pick for that. Drop his 16th rounder, continue on with both drafts as planned, follow the rules we made. I'm not in favor of booting him or anything like that, but I don't want to pause the drafts for one guy. If we get to his next pick in either draft without word, we follow the 12 hr rule again, which if missed for the third time would trigger a vote per league rules.

I disagree with this completely. I have a waiting list of GMs that would LOVE to be in this league and would be active. When they were put on the list they all knew that their was a chance that the team they will get won't be there own. Everybody was fine with this.
As a commish of this league I am trying to look out for 19 other people. Not 1. This league will be more fun if everybody is active. If we have somebody who isn't drafting now and leaves a very irresponsible list what will stop them from not answering trade messages later or not setting up lineups.
This has happened multiple times in my other keeper league. We tried being nice and it only got worse.

Wow, I didn't know we had a waiting list. That makes this a bit different I suppose. I still think we continue on with the drafts and if me misses his next pick we vote on dismissal
In my opinion, yes all of this is true that he knew when things would happen and perhaps he didn't put in a sufficent list. As much as all of this sucks, i don't think you can fault a guy for taking a vacation. If you were on vacation wouldn't you just want to be at peace? I don't see him being on vacation a reason for why he would become inactive or lazy later on. If we find he does become inactive then yes i agree he should be kicked, and i'd agree even if my ass was on the line, but I don't think punishing him for enjoying his time away is viable. Besides, when we have everyone here the draft goes very smooth and strong and there's a long wait till the season. No reason to be impatient with a man on vacation.
What are we even discussing here? It feels like NYR already made his decision. Are we going to replace TBL or not?
I'd hope not i mean, a one day pause in the draft is fine, just send him another message asking for some really deep picks that we are sure no one has, and then proceed with the draft until we can't, hopefully by then he will be back. Chances are if he's answering on vacation he IS quite excited to be in the league.

This is the first time he's repsonded in 2 1/2 days. He submitted 5 picks that were already taken.
I responded to him by updating him on the situation. I'm waiting to hear what he says before deciding anything.
I want to keep this league as democratic as possible as this league is all of ours, BUT I've seen this thing happen and it can be poisonous to a league. I want to o what's best for 20 people, not 1.
I'm going on vacation in September. In my other league my waiver draft is happening while I'm gone. I'm submitting a 50 player list of who I want so their is no confusion and it doens't hold up the league. Tampa did not do any REAL preparation for his trip. it is just disheartening to see.

Idk I feel like kicking someone for malprep before vacation is a little uptight for this league. A couple of you I've spoken to and as a general consensus I like everyone here and I think it'll be a fun few years of fantasy hockey for me, as you guys are quite chill and easy to talk some hockey with. I see you may have had other leagues with issues, but those leagues are not this league and I have full confidence that we can keep good activity. I'd try to treat this league as if it's the first one you've ever held because this league is pretty cool and special and not like many I've seen! Anyways that's my last bit of opinion on the matter and if it comes to a vote you know where my vote lies, and i'm glad you're waiting on what he says before deciding to put him up for an eviction of sorts (Sounds like im on big brother!)
He's on vacation, give him a break. Postpone the draft until after August long weekend, and if he isn't back/more prepared by then, let's find a new guy. We've still got >2 months until the season starts, I don't see the need to rush into this.
Ok, so he got back to me. He says he's been on the road.
He seems unaware of what;s going on here so I updated him.
He submitted anothr 5 person list....all 5 were taken....don't know when he's getting back to me again.
He did not submit any further prospects.
To say he didn't know when the prospect draft would start is false, since he did vote on that poll.
So he didn't even bother to log in or check the google sheet and see if any of them were taken... Wow
There's no way he'd be able to open that monster on mobile, it's way to big. And he might not even have cellular data. At this point in the draft, it would be very hard for him to guess who's available, so I think he should just let someone of his choice autograft for him... If we don't boot him.

Maybe I'm coldhearted but I agree. We cant just look at one event in isolation. I wouldn't fault somebody for going on vacation. What I'm concerned about is the lack of communication that we have included safeguards for. There's a vacations thread. There's a time away thread. Neither was used. All we got was a text to one member saying they'd be away and then never following up. If it had been anyone else I wouldnt be so skeptical but it was by the only person to miss a pick and one of the few people we consistently come to a halt on. I agree it's a red flag for sure because if you aren't in now, you certainly wont be come March. If the man was just on vacation, we should cut him some slack and I agree that we don't need to rush because this thing has gone faster than most of us expected but let's not just discount it.

Actually i'm gonna come back to say that I really like this idea. It's a form of punishment for "you didn't prepare, you get what you get" but also that it doesn't mean he will go.
On second thought, a break might not be a bad choice. We finish up the first round and a half of the prospect draft, and then wait for TBL. We're making great time. Also, I really agree with Washington's points about making this a fun, chill league. If Tampa really messes up in the future, then as you said NYR (Rob), the guys on the waiting list wouldn't mind having a team that they don't own.
